Brooding Chicks for the Farm

A class for Middle School Children

 

Are you interested in a farm project with chickens and baby chicks?  Come help set up a small breeding flock, collect, incubate and hatch eggs and learn to care for the new baby chicks!   This hands-on class will participate in the entire process of hatching baby chicks.  Activities will include setting up a breeding pen, preparing the incubator, collecting fertile eggs, learning about genetic traits, incubating eggs,  learning about the needs and development of chick embryos, and observing the live embryos through the eggshell.   You’ll also experience hatching, setting up a chick brooder, moving the chicks into the brooder and learning about the care of baby chicks.

4 Sessions:

  • Overview, set up incubator and breeding pen
  • Collect and set eggs, chicken care chores on the farm
  • Candle eggs, discuss embryology
  • Hatching and chick care

 

Who:  Children ages 10-14

Location: Codman Community Farm, 58 Codman Road, Lincoln, MA

Dates:  Wednesdays September 24th,  October 1st, 15th, 22nd   3:45-5:00 pm

Cost:  $75 for members and Lincoln residents, $90 for others.
